Prostate Disorders

A very common problem seen in males with advancing age is the increasing prostate gland size. It may occur due to benign prostatic hypertrophy or prostatitis or prostate cancer etc. It is a progressive condition that exclusively affects the prostate gland and if not checked may lead to other complications.

What Is A Prostate Gland?

The prostate is a small gland located beneath the urinary bladder and encloses the urethra. It is made up of two lobes (or regions) completely surrounded by an outer tissue layer. The gland produces the fluid that forms a part of the semen and it pours its secretion in the urethra at the time of ejaculation of seminal fluid.

This gland matures to its maximum by the age of 25 years in males. After which, this gland continues to grow in size and leads to a condition known as BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERTROPHY (BPH).

It is estimated that 50 - 60% of all men between the ages of 40 and 60 years and up to 90% of men over the age of 80 years have some degree of BPH.

There are many diseases that occur as a result of a disordered prostate gland. The most common ones are prostatitis and prostate cancer.

What Is Prostatitis?

In prostatitis, there is inflammation in the prostate gland which gets enlarged mostly due to some bacterial infection. Patients of prostate cancer are also common and can be effectively managed with appropriate treatment.
